Menswear Trends Rising
March 15, 2012 No CommentsWhen you think of Canadian men what image springs to mind? That of a masculine lumberjack? A hunter with a shot deer slung over his back? A red-suited Mountie? Well according to figures out this month, the Canadian man should be a well-dressed individual who cares about his appearance. ![]()
That’s because sales in Canada’s menswear department were up by 3% in 2011 in contrast to women’s wear falling by 4%. Analysts say that more men are buying pricier items such as designer blazers and shirts in an effort to look good in order to create the right impression at work or when trying to get onto the job market.
So how does that compare to the UK? Well Mintel, the market research company, say that menswear did start to recover at the start of 2011 but that growing numbers of men are looking for cheap designer wear in supermarkets or less expensive stores and are buying one of two items of good quality clothing rather than lots of cheap men’s clothing. However overall figures comparing June 2010 to June 2011 show 0% growth. So are British men lagging behind when it comes to looking after our appearance?
Well according to the Daily Mail the average British male spends £570 a year on designer clothing, yet statistics gathered by American’s Business Adviser online magazine would suggest that single US men spend just over $46 over a 6 month period on clothes – not exactly dressing to impress then eh fellas?
But the growth in the menswear market is reflected in the UK, US and Canada. In fact the US luxury menswear market has nearly doubled that of womenswear but the real shock is in who is buying all this luxury wear for global statistics show that Chinese men are snapping up designer menswear!
So if you want to encounter well dressed men then you need to head for either China or Canada it would seem. Although the British are catching up and with more designer menswear clothing now available online, at cheaper prices than in high street stores, surely it’s only a matter of time before we catch up with the Chinese? Mind you, we’ve got a long way to go as Chinese consumers make up 70% of the global luxury market growth so come on guys, cast away those cheap market shirts and invest in some Armani and Hugo Boss instead!
