British Fashion Designers Wanted!
February 7, 2012 No CommentsNow that London Fashion Week is nearing it seems that British talent is all the rage within the fashion industry and a Fashion Fringe Road Show set up by journalist Colin McDowell is about to hit the road looking for top new designers and their designer clothing from around the UK.
Some of Britain’s best known male designers will be joining him in their search for fresh new talent, including Julien Macdonald, Matthew Williamson, Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane and Gareth Pugh. All of these designers have one thing in common, they all took their designer dreams to London where they eventually realised their ambitions. But as not everyone can just pack up to head for the capital, the team have decided to travel to them and give them a helping hand to fulfil their own fashion designer dreams.
The aim of the exercise is to help bolster the UK’s reputation for producing creative fashion designers and of course it all ties in with London Fashion Week. It’s also a chance for young, enterprising talent to prove their worth to a panel of highly qualified, experienced designers who understand the hurdles faced by many students starting up in the fashion industry.
With so many students struggling to finance their courses, let alone travel to London for vital work experience, the Fashion Fringe road show couldn’t come at a better time. As McDowell says “The outlook for these students is pretty bleak, it’d be foolish to pretend it isn’t. There are a great many young designers who are hanging on by their fingernails. But there is a huge amount of talent lost because people are snobby and they don’t want to know about things happening outside London. The spirit of Fashion Fringe is all encompassing and welcoming.”
Past winners of the road show include Erdem Moralioglu who has gone on to design outfits for Michelle Obama and David Cameron’s wife Samantha; and Fyodor Golan who will be showcasing his first collection at the London Fashion Week.
