British Designers Buck the Trend
February 1, 2012 No CommentsWith designer fashion already buzzing with the news that London is to get its own men’s fashion weekend, some British male designers are already celebrating after coming on top of the fashion industry and are set to put Britain well and truly on the fashion map.
All too often we see designers coming from the shores of Italy and France such as Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Massimo Osti, founder of Stone Island, but now at last Britain is making waves of its own in the fashion industry thanks to some Great British talent.
Jianhui London who originally hails from China but is now a British resident, has just seen his innovative fashion designs grace the covers of both Fashion Daily and Trend Forecast magazine whilst he himself was the talk of one of the world’s most prestigious fashion shows – Premiere Classe. So what has got the industry so excited? Rope. No, not the kind you find on ships but an accessory that has taken the designer world by storm.
‘Rope’ is a cotton tubed rope consisting of many strands that forms a type of eye-catching scarf to complement any outfit. It’s a cross between jewellery and neckwear and looks particularly great on men. His last collection already made the headlines in designer menswear. The second collection of rope is known as ‘The Next Pashmina-Yangmao’ and is luxuriously made from 99% pure wool with 1% of silk added for a soft, almost caress-like quality next to the skin.
The collection even boasts green credentials as each rope is dyed using environmentally friendly methods and then hand finished to meticulously high standards. His new rope collection will be on sale later this year.
Another British fashion winner is Scotsman Jonathan Saunders who has every reason to celebrate after winning the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. The young fashion designer will not only receive a £200,000 cash prize but also a mentoring programme from the BFC that will help him achieve his goals and ambitions over a 12 month period.
It’s every young designer’s dream and Saunders declared he was over the moon to win such a coveted award: “I’m so happy about winning this award…We have many exciting plans for the future and this along with the support network provided by the British Fashion Council will enable us to achieve our goals.”
The Glasgow born fashion designer has already won the BFC’s British Enterprise Award in 2006 and his designer clothing collection has proved to be popular with shoppers who are eager to snap up his colourful and vibrant designs from the catwalk.
Designer and fashion news has never been so awash with British Fashion happenings. Let’s hope that the London International Fashion Showcase next month encourages more interest in British talent and designer menswear from the UK.
